Problem/Question
A web site is not appearing at the top of the search results when using the University web site search engine. How can I increase the position of my web page in the search results?
Overview
This problem occurs when new web sites are added to the www.csuci.edu web site and are not linked from other web pages. The Google search engine bases its search results rankings on a number of factors, including the quality and relevance of content, as well as links from other highly-ranked content. Pages that are not yet indexed or those without relevant content may not appear ranked highly (or at all) in the search engine results.
Solution
1. Submit a request to add a "promotion" or "keymatch" to CSUCI's Google Search engine. This will cause the matched result to appear in the "Closest Keyword Matches" section at the top of the search results page. You will need to specify the keywords or phrases to be matched, as well as the destination URL that the matched terms should link to.
2. Create links on existing CSUCI web site pages to your new web site. This will enable the Google Search web crawler to add these pages to the CSUCI web search index and will help the page appear higher in the search engine rankings.
3. Ensure that the content quality of your web site is highly relevant and meets accessibility requirements. Review MTU's article on search engine optimization and update your web page to follow these practices.
