Research computing using Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a public cloud platform that provides solutions and services for research computing, including virtual machines, database instances, storage, analytics, machine learning, application development deployment, backup and disaster recovery.

Pay-per-use, easy to use, flexible, cost effective, scalable, high performance, reliable and secure computing infrastructure which can be used for research computing and high performance applications. 

Key Features

  • Provision virtual servers (e.g., Amazon EC2), storage (e.g., Amazon S3), and databases (Amazon RDS) as needed
  • Migration service to move local servers to AWS (AWS server migration service)
  • Developer tools, Management tools, Security and Identity Management, Analytics and more.

Requirements

You must fill out & sign the CSUCI AWS Agreement. This includes obtaining the approval of the department chair or manager.  

Cost

Varies based on service and usage. The approving department for each account is responsible for all fees and costs for any accounts linked to CI's master account, and will be charged back on a quarterly basis. View general AWS pricing information on the Amazon web site. You can also use the AWS Cost Calculator to develop more accurate estimates for a set of services.

Getting Started

  1. Fill out & sign the CSUCI AWS Agreement
  2. Use the "Request Service" button to request a meeting with Asha Ramachandra (asha.ramachandra@csuci.edu) to complete onboarding.
