Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why are we switching from Cisco VoIP to Microsoft Teams Phone?
The Cisco VoIP system will soon reach End of Life (EOL). Microsoft Teams Phone offers better integration with our existing Microsoft 365 tools, supports flexible work environments, and reduces infrastructure and maintenance costs.
Will my phone number change?
No. Your current campus phone number will be ported over to Microsoft Teams Phone and will remain the same.
What devices can I use with Microsoft Teams Phone?
You can make and receive calls using:
- The Microsoft Teams desktop app
- The Teams mobile app
- New physical desk phones (for shared spaces, classrooms, etc.)
Will we receive physical phones?
Physical phones will still be available. We are still finalizing the models we are getting.
Will departments be purchasing these phones? If so, what is the cost?
There will be a cost to the department. However, we are still finalizing the cost structure.
Can the physical phones call out without being logged into a computer?
Yes. The phones will be standalone, similar to the current phones we have now.
Can the physical phones operate independently of a computer?
Yes. They will, however, continue to share the same network port as the computer.
Can users who don't have a physical phone still have multiple lines?
Yes. Multiple lines will appear slightly differently, but will function the same way, where users have their personal line as well as a "generic line" that rings.
Will I still be able to make emergency calls (911)?
Yes. Microsoft Teams Phone is fully compliant with E911 requirements to ensure emergency services can locate you.
When will my department be migrated?
Migrations will occur in phases. You’ll be notified in advance with your specific migration date and next steps.
What support and training will be provided?
ITS will offer hands-on training sessions
